I found an article on the website Farm Wars – published in February of 2011 that speaks to whether or not this eye-catching little USDA ORGANIC seal on products means anything when it comes to GMOs. According to this article, my worst fears have come true. I have reposted the first and last paragraphs of the article, with a link to the full piece at the end.
First paragraph: Yes, it’s true. There are most likely GMOs in our organic foods. Not because they are “allowed,” because they aren’t, but because contamination is widespread throughout the agricultural industry, and the USDA’s National Organics Program (NOP) is designed so that GMOs can enter USDA Certified Organics through “accidental contamination.”
Last paragraph: It is a sad day indeed when America’s crops are so thoroughly contaminated with GMOs that our organic food processors are forced to obtain non-GMO products from other countries. (Read more.)

I am also reposting a comment to the above article written by a corn farmer who goes by the handle nedludsays. His view is, um, well, pretty firsthand. All I can say is: yikes!
I have said this before, ‘organic certified’ is a joke. It is nothing but a joke, a hoax, a memory of something that was, or could have been, and is no more.
Simple facts: I’ve grown o.p. (open-pollinated) corn for 25 years, saving seed and re-planting. We live–our farm–is surrounded by wildlife area and woods and natural boundaries. The closest farmer to us, though a large farmer, swears to us that he only grows non-GMO crops–non-GMO soybeans, edible beans and wheat. That is his rotation–AND NO CORN. Yet, my o.p. corn when it’s been tested, shows tiny amounts of GMO contamination. Even on this farm, isolated as it is from commercial corn, there is has been shown, (ie., lab-tested) tiny amounts of contamination!
Contrast this with the ordinary ‘organic certified’ farm. Sure, he/she may plant some sort of non-GMO seed corn (is it?), but even if it is, RIGHT ACROSS THE ROAD from that farm is a THOUSAND acres of GMO corn whose pollen is infesting the supposed ‘organic’ corn at pollination time in July. It’s (the GMO crap) right across the road! They (the organic certifiers) tell you, you have to sacrifice a few rows of corn or something, a ‘barrier’ it is called. You throw those rows away, you’re ordered to. By the certified experts. And supposedly, this makes the rest ‘good’. But you cannot control the wind, and you cannot control what your neighbor plants and so you have a thousand acres of GMO corn, right next door. Producing HUGE amounts of GMO-laden pollen! So this so-called ‘organic corn’ actually produces a GMO-laden seed via the pollinating process (pollen goes a mile) and it is fed to the so-called ‘organic’ farmer’s so-called ‘organic’ animals. Or is sold as ‘organic’ corn for seed or feed. IT IS NOT!
‘Organic’ is over. It is finished….the best you can hope for, work for, is ‘sorta organic’. How does that sound? Does that sound like something you want to pay Organic Valley, Stoneyfield and Horizon a whole bunch of cash AND MAKE THEM WEALTHY for?
They’re already wealthy. You and me? We lost.
ORGANIC IS A JOKE.
