During the November election, prop 37 in California got a LOT of attention. Prop 37 would have required GMO labeling had it passed. It was believed that if GMO labeling laws could pass in California, the whole country would benefit because California is such a huge chunk of the population. It was narrowly defeated but the reality is that awareness of the issue exploded during the election so really, pro GMO labeling folks came out winners.
Several states have GMO labeling legislation in the works – Vermont and Washington to name a few, and now, apparently, Maine, as I’ve just learned. There are also reports of a labeling law at the national level in the works. This Maine story got the attention of Sleuth4Health because of the low-key but well supported and bi-partisan way they are going about the business of legislating labeling laws.
