I recently found the article below in Huffington Post, written by Gary Hirshberg (Chairman and Founding Partner of Just Label It, Chairman and Co-Founder of Stonyfield Farm), and I feel I must share it, as it gives a non-emotional, neutral argument for labeling, along with some general background data.
Here is a brief excerpt from the Q & A-format-piece:
Who else labels GE foods?
It is worth noting that 62 other nations around the world including all of the EU (European Union), Russia and China have required labeling when approving these crops. Even war-torn Syria requires labeling of these ingredients. Read all of Why GE Labeling Makes Sense
In the United States, the discussion of GMOs is really just getting started as state and local governments are beginning to attempt to pass labeling laws because consumers are finding out, and are largely outraged, that they’ve been eating GMOs since 1994.
Sleuth4Health says: In my research of this topic, and I’ve been at it for about six months now, I have found that the highest quality articles and websites about GMOs come from Europe and given that I am English speaking, I gravitate toward those published by entities in Great Britain. Europe is about 15-20 years ahead of the US in terms of research, labeling laws and just generally having an informed public. One of my goals with Sleuth4Health is to do what little I can to help bring the US up to date with and on an even par with Europe and what they know.
I regularly get new readers stopping by here and I so appreciate that. I often repeat myself with the hope of engaging new purveyors of the cause. I also have some regular readers and I appreciate all of you and I hope you don’t mind when I post similar articles about similar topics. My goal is to educate! (I am a teacher by profession, after all).
