In his Huffpost Tech blog, UK farmer Michael Hart, takes the point of view that Monsanto’s genetically engineered Roundup Ready (read MIT discussion of Roundup Ready controversy) crops are “not fit for purpose” because as weed tolerance grows, and it is growing rapidly, other herbicides are needed, thereby nullifying the “one herbicide does it all” promise. So in his view, why bother with Roundup Ready seeds at all?
He goes on to say that in many cases, farmers are afraid to use non-GMO for fear of being sued by the big biotech companies, namely Monsanto, who own a majority of seed companies world wide and continue to buy up seed companies in rapid fashion. The big biotech companies like Monsanto also own patents and intellectual property rights on genetically modified seeds. (Read full blog post.)
